When you need to make international payments, it’s important to enter the correct payment information. You need to have the recipient’s name and account number in the correct format, for example IBAN and also the BIC/SWIFT address for the country and bank you’re sending the money to.

If you’re missing payment information or are unsure whether or not the information is correct, you should contact the recipient or their bank.

What are IBAN, BIC and SWIFT?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number and is an international standard for account numbers.

BIC stands for Bank Identifier Code and is the code that identifies the bank. BIC is also called SWIFT and is required for payments to a number of countries, and always when using the IBAN.

BIC/SWIFTaddresses consist of 8 or 11 characters, for example DNB’s address is DNBANOKKXXX.

How international payments work

Send a payment

You need to have some details ready before you can send a payment:
- The recipient’s account, name and address
- Some countries require the IBAN number. See list of countries you must and should use IBAN for
- Recipient bank’s BIC/SWIFT address
- Currency you wish to pay in
NB! For amounts over NOK 100 000, the Currency Register Act requires information about what the amount is for. This is reported with a payment type code.
In the online bank, the payment type codes are made available via a dropdown list.
In addition to the payment type code, you must briefly state what the transfer is for.

Sending a payment within Europe

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) involves common rules for payments in euros within the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and the Vatican.

A SEPA payment is based on use of the international account number IBAN. In practice this means that you must use the IBAN if you’re going to make a SEPA payment in a euro country.
If, as a corporate customer, you have euro payments and banking requirements in several SEPA countries, we can set up the account structure and payment solutions that meet your needs.
Accounts can be placed in DNB’s branch offices and subsidiaries in the area.
Where there’s a need for local services in countries where DNB doesn’t have any branches, accounts in partner banks can be included in the solution.

Reduce risk with a currency account

If you have incoming and outgoing payments in a fixed currency, you can reduce currency risk with a currency account. You can easily open the account in the corporate online bank.

How should I write the payment address with IBAN?

Can I transfer and receive money from any country?

Payments to some countries cannot be made under the rules and legislation concerning international sanctions. Sanctions can be directed at individuals, companies, products, services, specific sectors and/or geographical areas etc.

You must first ensure that the payment doesn’t breach the sanctions regime and that you’ve performed the necessary investigations. You can find the Norwegian rules and legislation at Regjeringen.no

Note that transactions that may be subject to the sanctions regime may be subject to an additional charge which is set on the basis of the estimated time needed to clarify whether the payment is in breach of the rules and legislation.

Norwegian entities must also observe the US sanctions regime as long as the activity involves a US person, import or export of products with US content or origin, or if a transaction is made in US dollars (USD).

How can I open an account with DNB abroad?

To open an account at one of our foreign branch offices, you must be a DNB customer and meet at least one of the following requirements:

Turnover per year: minimum NOK 1 000 000
Transactions per month: minimum 10
Average deposit: minimum NOK 100 000

Before you can open an account, you must fill out the “Company Profile” form together with an adviser at the bank.
