Travel insurance covers necessary expenses if you suffer an injury, lose or have belongings stolen, become ill, or if a sudden accident should occur while travelling. It’s prudent for your company to have insurance that applies once you or your employees are outside the home or office. Travel insurance can also cover holiday and leisure travel for employees and insure employees’ families.

The situation in Ukraine

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advice in regard to Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. The travel insurance policy covers cancellation of journey to these places, and also covers evacuation of customers who find themselves in the affected countries.

We have started receiving enquiries from customers who have general questions about the situation and what their insurance covers. The travel insurance applies as normal to all destinations that are not subject to the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If flights, for example to countries near Ukraine, are cancelled as a result of the situation, the airline will refund the costs to the customer.

Covers evacuation from affected countries

We cover evacuation back home to Norway for customers who find themselves in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Moldova. Evacuating customers who find themselves in the affected areas is not an easy task. According to our assistance agency, SOS International, there are some challenges with booking tickets. Restrictions are being introduced all the time and it can be difficult to book tickets from one day to the next.

This incurs additional costs, but the customer may try to find alternatives themselves in order to travel out of these areas. If customers wish to travel home to Norway, they must also contact the airline if flights are cancelled, but we will of course help in this situation.

Does not cover fear

Cancellations to other destinations and countries because of fear of war or of what is happening in Ukraine are not covered by the travel insurance. If the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues travel advice about other countries in Europe due to the situation, the travel insurance will cover cancellations.

We encourage everyone who is abroad, or who will be travelling in Europe now, to follow developments and check the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s travel advice. Customers should also check their insurance policy documents to see what applies.

Green cards

We no longer issue green cards that cover Russia and Belarus

Green cards are an international insurance card that confirms that you have valid liability insurance on your vehicle.

The Norwegian Motor Insurers’ Bureau has evaluated the geopolitical situation and recommends that all members remove the insurance cover for Russia and Belarus.

Fremtind is following this recommendation, and as of today, we are no longer issuing green cards with cover for these two countries.
