In order to apply for a NIE- number you can either do this personally at a local police station or you can give a lawyer a Power of Attorney to apply for this on your behalf.

You need to take with you to the police station in Spain:
You will receive a receipt from the police station when you hand in your application. You must collect your NIE number from the same police station after 5-10 days. Another person can collect this number for you if they have the original receipt.
